How might we know the work of an artist through the medium of photograph?
The dissertation written for my fine art degree in 2004 looks at how the photograph is used to document an artists work or become a new work in its own right.
'The photograph is a significant aspect to any artists work in making it available to a wider public. Yet how do we know the work of an artist through this medium? Whilst text also plays a significant role in how we understand an artist’s work, it is the role of the photograph that I am interested in exploring in this dissertation. I also want to take into consideration the role of the photograph in terms of a visual history of the work for future appreciation by those not able to see the work in the time of its making or exhibition. In the absence of an experience of a work, in whatever form it might take, the photograph stands in for the work and becomes of equal importance as the work itself, if not a work on its’ own terms'.
