Introduction

An exhibition of recent work exploring the unconscious and letting go. 'In the Wild Wood' was exhibited at OVADA in Oxford in April 2007 .

"The work includes some drawings made in a variety of interesting techniques, a beautiful and intriguing video work and an interactive drawing in the gallery window"
Holly Slingsby - Ovada.

My work makes reference to surrealism and automatic drawing - 'to move beyond the usual contradictions which vitiate our thinking and our articulated thought', 'the disinterested play of thought, the power of dreams, the will to interpret the data of experience and to surpass ordinary experience'. - 'based on the conviction that art is not an end in itself'.

This exhibition, like many other exhibitions I have created, involves a participatory element that attempts to encourage people to overcome their concerns about their lack of ability to draw. I am interested in exploring the role of the artist as collaborator and how visitors can be encouraged to 'experience the process' of making as well as provide me with material from which to work with. Using drawing implements attached to sticks the 'drawer' is encouraged to accept that 'it doesn't matter' how a mark is made by taking control away from them, (the ultimate form of automatic drawing being to get others to initiate it for you).
